Key Takeaways
- The Spider-Verse is a complex web of Spider-People from alternate universes, including different versions of Spider-Man.
- The best order to watch the Spider-Man movies is in chronological order, so you need to start with Spider-Man (2002).
- Sony also has its own Spider-Verse with spin-off films like Venom and Morbius, with more to come in 2024.
Spider-Man isn’t a typical superhero; he’s a character in the Spider-Verse, which is a complex web of Spider-People in alternate universes that has converged in the latest Spider-Man movie.
There have been three takes on the character we’ve seen on the big screen: the Tom Holland-led version, Andrew Garfield’s, and Toby Maguire’s. Recently, the trio joined forces thanks to some multiversal high-jinks in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is part of the MCU. This team-up film also features villains from Sony’s Spider-Man films, like Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. While Sony now co-produces Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland with Marvel, they also teamed up to release Into The Spider-Verse in 2018 and Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.
Starting in 2018, Sony began producing its own Spider-Verse offshoot films, starting with 2018’s Venom and its 2021 sequel, along with two of the biggest box office flops in recent memory with Morbius and Madam Web. There are two more Sony Spider-Verse films due out this year, with Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter both slated to release this fall.
Then there’s what might be the most critically acclaimed Spider-Man film universe, the animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, while its sequel was also well received. A new entry was originally supposed to be released in March 2024, but it’s been delayed without any updates.
Sound confusing? Well, to truly understand what’s happening with the Spider-Verse and how Spider-Man fits into the MCU, you need to re-watch all the web-slinger movies. Here’s the best order to follow — it’s as chronological as you can get and explains everything you need to know.

Spider-Man movies in order: Chronological order
There are spoilers below. At the bottom of this guide, you will find a spoiler-free version that lists the Spider-Man movies in chronological order.
This viewing order guide is mostly chronological, but it can get confusing because there are multiple universes and timelines at play. For instance, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is from an alternate universe in 2002 but appears in the present-day film No Way Home, which is set in the main MCU timeline. We’re starting off with Madam Web though, which is also set in 2002.
1 Madam Web
All the Spider-Women in one movie
Madam Web (2024)
Madam Webb tells the story of Cassie Webb, a paramedic who begins experiencing visions of the future after surviving a near-death experience.
Dakota Johnson stars in this Sony-verse Spider spin-off that centers around a paramedic in early 2000’s New York who survives a near-death experience and begins to experience visions of the future. At the same time, a man with similar powers named Ezekial Sims (Tahar Rahim) begins to hunt down three women who he believes will play a role in killing him in the future. Those three characters all go on to become Spider-Woman in the comics. Cassie has to find the girls and protect them from Sims, while discovering the secrets of her powers.
Spider fans will enjoy seeing a young Ben Parker, aka Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben, played by Adam Scott. He works alongside Cassie as a paramedic.
