Deadpool & Wolverine’s Director Reveals His Favorite Easter Egg

You can’t watch Deadpool & Wolverine and not realize you’re missing a lot. It’s a movie so packed with jokes and references that it would be impossible to see everything on a first or maybe even a second viewing. Director Shawn Levy has seen it many, many more times than that though, and in a new interview picks out a favorite Easter egg that’s so subtle and out-of-the-box, we completely missed it.

Speaking to Variety, Levy revealed at one moment when Deadpool and Wolverine are walking in the Void, they pass by the charred remains of the car from Planes, Trains and Automobiles. “Maybe you’ll notice a walk-and-talk scene on a green rolling hillside, and there’s the charred vehicle and trunk from Planes, Trains and Automobiles inexplicably parked on the hillside,” Levy said. “That’s a nod to that movie, which inspired a lot of the DNA of our movie.”

Planes, Trains and Automobiles, of course, is a 1987 classic written and directed by John Hughes about two strangers (John Candy and Steve Martin) who find themselves on an unexpected adventure trying to get home for Thanksgiving. The characters start as adversaries and eventually become close friends, much like Deadpool & Wolverine. And, along the way, the car they are driving gets burnt to a crisp.

So now we want to go see the movie again to find that Easter egg. Levy also discusses a few of the Easter eggs in the Happy Hogan scene early in the film, what it was like getting stars like Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, and Henry Cavill on board, and much more. Head over to Variety to check it out—and check back later this week when we dive in with some more exciting revelations about the film, which is now in theaters.
