How I upgraded Siri with ChatGPT to get smarter AI responses on my iPhone
I can still talk to Siri, but now I get better answers generated by ChatGPT. It’s the best of both worlds.
It’s times like this when it’s worth remembering what is written on the front of the fictional electronic guide book that most resembles the AI chatbot, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. That’s right: DON’T PANIC.

The first status update on OpenAI’s website was at 00:21 PDT. The most recent update is from 02:00 PDT, indicating that the company is continuing to work on a fix for this issue. At the time of writing, it has been several hours since ChatGPT went down. The service did briefly come back again for about ten minutes at around 03:30 PDT but soon stopped working again. Any queries in the app and on the browser are met with an Internal Server Error message.
Could ChatGPT being down be good news?
Are new features imminent?
OpenAI
There’s some speculation that ChatGPT is down because OpenAI is implementing the eagerly anticipated updates to ChatGPT that were announced at OpenAI’s spring update. These features include an improved voice chat that allows you to get instant responses and interrupt ChatGPT mid-sentence, as well as the ability to show ChatGPT a live feed from your phone and ask the app about anything that’s visible.
The messaging on the OpenAI status page does make this sound like an unplanned outage rather than a planned update, but it may be the case that ChatGPT is down, whether through design or error, because the new functionality is being switched on.

What can I do if ChatGPT is down?
Other AI chatbots are available
If you’re desperate to use ChatGPT, there are other options available. Bing AI, which runs on the same models as ChatGPT 4 is free and available to use in a browser. Just visit bing.com and click the Copilot tab at the top of the screen. I’ve tested this out, and Copilot is currently working without any issues. You can use Copilot to create images, just like you can in ChatGPT, but you’ll need to be signed in with a Microsoft account.
Alternatively, you can visit the webpage for Google’s Gemini AI, which is also free to use and also currently running without any issues. You can use Gemini to create images, too, unless you live in the EU, Switzerland, or the UK. There are plenty of other options available, but these are ones you can access quickly if you’re in a pinch.
